This is not a critique of the language, it is a bigoted attack. Scala may not be as functional as Ocaml, this does not mean it is not functional at all. Just as German is a more precise language than English, doesn't make English complete incomprehensible language. Wielded by some, such as myself, it may appear to be incomprehensible but that should be taken as a slur against the user not the language.

This kind of thing makes me sad, whether it is something as banal as an attack on a Programming Language or the more discriminatory attacks on people because of their race, colour, origin or social standing.

Run Keeper

The Mactalk podcast covered off runkeeper on their weekly round up of iphone apps and by god it maybe useful. The idea behind the app is to record your run using the GPS of the phone and when you are finished you can get a few basic stats off the phone like km/h and how long you have been running and a history of previous runs with a funky little graph. You can also upload the data to the run keeper website and have it produce wonderful map of your run on google maps with an accompanying graph showing speed over time and elevation over time.
A wonderfully easy app to use and it may encourage me to get off my ass and excercise a little, if for nothing more than see the graphs and maps.
The only negative after a quick blat round the Sculptures by the sea this morning is the lack of ability to exporting your data. Although a post of the forum from early August suggests they are thinking about how is best to do this.

AppleTv - Next development platform ?

There have been a few clues about this over the last week, with the hint of a product transition and a short article on tuaw about apps store possibly being extended to the Apple TV.
The AppleTV with the iphone/ipod touch device would be an excellent gaming platform to compete with the wii - the iphone has a vibration function, accelerometer and touch screen making it a rather solid controller - as long as you don't get any calls mid game ;)
The inclusion of safari on the AppleTV with the iphone/touch as a wireless keyword could serve as a entry level connected device, while still providing a compelling reason for consumers to upgrade to a MacBook, to get standalone applications, isight and personal storage, rather than cloud storage.

The west with all it's wonderful ideals and patronising "we know best" politics. Ready to rush in and help at a moments notice, if it is bombing the crap out of your country and killing your leader to slapping you on the wrist and telling you not to build naughty bombs or power stations.

The west is willing to run stable if not morally dodgy countries and bugger them up, but not go into already shafted countries and help out, maybe attempt to do some good. Dodgy and corrupt leader, check, country in a state of crisis, check, inflation out of control, check. Right then we can't fuck this up any worse than it is move along. Military rulers, check, humanitarian disaster being ignored by the rulers, check, once again nothing we can do here, move along. Despot ruler, check, great infrastructure, check, high levels of education, check, non-christian abrahamic religion, check, oil, check, wahoooooo lets go rip this mother apart, bombs, bombs, gotta have bombs.

Buying a new machine online.

So our washing machine died last weekend after a long and some what healthy life. We decided to try and make a vaguely informed decision and research a new one. Choice did this for us excellently, covering off the major categories we were interested in, energy and water efficient, reliability oh and wash clothes. It did cost 20 dollars for 3 months access, but the review we got was up to date and very informative - yay!

Once we had decided on a new machine we hunted round online for a bricks and mortar store to go and buy from and instead found Appliances Online. Appliances online were cheaper than the bricks and mortar and for most products could deliver the next day. The website had lots of detail including energy and water ratings and rebate eligibility. Oh and in the Sydney area they offered to hook up the new machine AND take the old machine - yippee !

The delivery idiot called and confirmed a time, which was nice, but the manner of the two delivery idiots was poor. Taking the piss out of the customer and the price of the product you have just delivered is uncool, whinging about doing your job, also uncool. Then again, what can you expect from someone who delivers washing machines for a living.

So the only disappointing part of the entire process was a human interaction, what a surprise, apart from that, how wonderful, thing ordered, delivered and old thing taken away all from the comfort of the sun room and iMac - wahoo !

Ummm will review of washing machine once we have had it for more than 2 days.

Yes this should have microformat love, but blogger lacks that love and I'm too tired to do it by hand - sorry :(

Social conscious Vs a consumer centric world.

How does one balance between the good of the planet and the need to earn a living in an ever increasing wired, or unwired as the case may be world. I'm living in the centre of middle classness at the moment, we drink organic free trade coffee, we buy organic veggies as much as possible, our washing products are all eco-friendly, our toilet paper is recycled, not one would assume from old toilet paper but still, we recycle, use low power bulbs and part of our energy bill is green.
We worry about global warming and whether we are on the happy or unhappy side of the climate tipping point. Is the planet screwed or just a bit buggerd. Is all the organic recycled low power goodness a waste of time because in the next 5 minutes, 2 months, 6 years Israel, Iran or the United States will get their tits in a tangle because someone said they were facists, hate mongers or reglious idiots and spit their nuclear dummy all over the rest of us and our organic coffee.
If we ignore the fact that a bunch of idiots could and probably will bugger up all our hard work, where do we stop, where do we find a level of balance and a sane source of information to help find that balance.
How do I lower my impact on the planet without jepordizing my standard of living and my work? I'm not about to go live in a mud hut and eat beetles, nor am I about to unplug my laptop
and stop buying consumer electronics ( okay just apple really ).
And there we have it, after a huge ramble, the point of this post - How as a geek to I balance my desire to not single handly be responsible for raping the planet, while staying relavent in my field.
Would an ebook reader be better for the planet than the 100 kgs of technical books I read ~100 pages from, or would it have to last me 15 years - something we know isn't going to happen. While the greens will say no tech is a good level of tech, that doesn't really cut it, I'm pretty sure that my Macbook Pro is more eco-friendly that some sub 1000 dollar laptop that I could have brought. Not least of all, this is still a powerful machine year after I brought it and in a year or two when I get rid of it, it will serve someone else for a few more years, much like my old Powerbook which is happily meeting Mums needs for about 15 months now.
I guess the question I am asking is "When should I curb my desire/need for technology and when doesn't it make a difference?", it's not like I'm buying every device under the sun and there are practical as well as ecological benefits from curbing spending, such as having money.

Greenpeace shit me, they are a huge marketing machine that don't let truth or fact get in the way of a good press release - see the last stories on apple products, that were widly inacturate - not quite the vim and vigore to get a correction to the PR. Hence fools, possibly well meaning, but fools non the less.

Anna and I had the mega veggie India food cook up yesterday. Out of the 5 dishes we got 9/10's there, missing only the Naan. We have Naan dough, just not Naan cooked, they are looking like lunch with left overs. Everything came from Mader Jaffrey, although the dal is suspiciously similar to the recipe that Ash and Mitul gave me a few years ago.

I think next time we will start a bit earlier and possibly do a little preplanning, small kitchen, lots of new dishes and short on time is not a good mix.

I've just looked through the photos from the Madgex party photos and a couple of things struck me.

I can keep in touch with my friends who are geographically disparate.
I've never given a lot of credence with the sociology and other humanity studies that have been going on into how technology is advancing at a rate greater than we can adopt it. Until tonight, when looking through the photos, I was struck by the idea that Jane had put them on flickr for the local Brightonians and the medium used to tell them about it also allowed me to "listen in". The thought of listening in made me wonder if I should be looking through the photos, if it was some how an invasion of my friends personal space.
No matter how connected you are with people digitally, nothing counts for physical time.

This all brought me to the following conclusions:

Technology is reducing the distance between people, but it isn't quite there. It misses some of the intimacies and that I guess exacerbates the distance, not being able to talk to people or see them dulls them, seeing and hearing them just out of reach is some times harder.
How does the speed of adoption allow people to understand and fully comprehend what they are immersing themselves in?
Being along way away from friend is still pants
The party looked good.
Seeing happy people you know is a wonderful feeling.

Hmmm google maps have lost there Satellite view for the entire world from Australian IP addressed, one would assume this is due to APEC and terrorist being A) so disorganized so as to not already have there maps ( because the CBD moves so much b) already be in Australia.

Then again, it could just be that google has lost all satellite image data for the entire world for people from AU IPs.

Google earth works, although one would assume it is cached data.

gah gah GAH HCF has to be the worst website I've had to use in a while, payment only works in IE and the morons don't understand * required means. I've just filled in a form for notification that didn't * all required fields, Possibly because depending on the information depended on what was required, but I'm thinking javascript would get ya round that, seeing as you have destroyed the usability of the rest of your site with it, why not finish the job.

Cayne was over for the weekend, was great to introduce him to Anna and catch up after what must be two or more years.

Went to Live earth on Saturday, the queues for the beer were a joke - so no booze, the queue for food was an hour so didn't eat a lot. Crowded House were an excellent end to a great but bloody freezing day.

The muppets below us have a console and like to play it loudly, I can't tell you the joy this brings me.

I'm so chuffed, just brought "The Kick Inside" downloaded in maybe a few minutes - felt like less.
Huge kick of nostalgia, it was one of Steph's albums, sort of assume it still is. Weird how things link together. From the album I can see our old house, the record cabinet, the record player. Dads loverly AR4s ( Mum, I still want my speakers back), from there to Christmas and sitting on the couch, I think I always used to sit next to the record player. Hmm, after more than 30 years, I really don't think much has changed (different people worry about food ) , we live in different places, Lisa is still a nazi for getting everyone together for presents, dad still deals, everyone is still happy.

I am hoping I'm wrong but I foresee Carbon trading|offsetting and the rest of the carbon ideas falling from favour when people realise that offsetting does little more than mask the problem.

Watching the London keynote and it reminded me of a thought I'd have earlier in the day - Google has become Sun, open sourcing | releasing technologies - for the same reason, just with a broader audiences. Possibly it is the son(sorry bad pun)| daughter of Sun - Sun build and delivered TCP/IP* and other lower parts of the stack - Google has built on them and built | building a new layer of tools and building blocks.

Overall very good, if not bloody cold - believe it or not a converted locomotive building is piss cold in the winter. Anyway it did mean it was hard to fall asleep.

One thing that I didn't know and looks rather cool is Google gadgets are meant to *just* work as Dashboard Widgets.

I'm somewhat interested to see if I can get gears to let dashboard widgets work off line, I can think of a few apps /widgets that would benefit.

Gears looks like a great idea, already think I can see several uses for it. However I need to read how the security works, how do you stop other sites accessing your data ? Also how do you stop malice sites filling the local store with rubbish data, are there size limits imposed on a url or can I download an HD DVD as required offline content.

I really need to start blogging this stuff when I think of it. I brought a 50mm lens while I was in SFO, err I was in SFO for JavaOne.

Anyway back to the point I brought a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and it has been wonderful - I'd forgotten that shutter speeds faster than 500 ms existed.

I think the lens may if anything let in too much light :|

How good was the China MotoGP, just finished watching it - hoping the rest of the season is that good.

It would be nice if the other Ducati and Yamaha were up the front as well, but it was nice to see Hopkins up there in a solid 3rd place - bring on France tomorrow.

My only dislike of watching the MotoGP is wondering what is going to happen - will my connect last, will it bomb out, will the audio get out of sync with the video.

It would be nice if you could book dedicated blocks of bandwidth - Sunday night from 22:00 for 3 hours. Shit I'd even pay, I mean I know I've signed up for a 24 Mbps connection and I only want 1/24th of that guaranteed for 3 hours - but still I'd pay.

Brown could be the best thing for Britain in a long while, but will need to move outside of the Iraq Halo and hope there are still people interested in values and not media created spin.
Bush out, please got not Hilary, then again the next leader of the US will not be a president, they will be the first. The first black or the first woman president.
Howard - Rudd is looking better and has managed not the implode, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Anyone want a subscription to motogp.com, I've paid for a high def package - 100 Euros, can I use it, no, do they respond to emails no, out of 3 races and 3 qualifiers how many have a been able to watch ?

Today I can't even log into the site, so 30 minutes into a 45 minute race I'm sitting here trying not to throw my laptop across the room.

The ONLY thing I get for my hundred Euros over a random punter rocking up to the site is the live coverage and interviews with the riders. I am NOT paying 100 fucking Euros for no tech support nor for rider fucking interviews that every other bike website covers as quick or sometimes quicker.

I brought Pragmatic Version Control Using Subversion, 2nd Edition on Richard's recommendation. Have only had a quick flick at it but is looking like a great buy.

On the Richard book front, I finished Penny Arcade Volume 2: Epic Legends of the Magic Sword Kings! a present that turned up over Christmas, a great book.

I love Tycho and Gabe, I don't have anywhere near enough time to play games now - not because I'm all busy with work and to old for life, but because I'm disorganized.
Anyway, the book was great, interesting to see how there style has changed since 2001 and some of the thoughts behind the comics.

I've brought a car.
It's a very boring Holden Astra.
It's my first vehicle in over 8 years and first car in god knows how long - It's also the first car I've ever brought new and the first automatic I've ever brought.
I can also run it on ethanol, which is wonderful. If I run low on booze I can siphon the car or equally i can run it on vodka if I can get to a gas station.

We have been using Bill Granger's new book Everyday, well pretty much everyday for the last two weeks, its great.

It lovely and the recipes, so far, have been piss easy. My only concern is that Bill seems to be everywhere at the moment and I wonder if there will be a backlash against him, it would be a shame, his books are wonderful.

If you don't have it, you really should buy it.

Well I've started reading again, we'll see how long it lasts this time before there is yet another pile of half finish books next to the bed and an ever growing collection of new books on the floor.

I've just finish Nick Hornby's The Complete Polysyllabic Spree, I liked it. Not least of all because he says and does things I do and agree with, such as, buying more books than you will every get round to reading and not reading books because they are literary, but because you enjoy them - nothing wrong with a bit of Dan Brown every now and then.

I've started Brave New World by Aldous Huxley on the plane home from Queensland. It was only an hour so not a lot of reading, rather a lot skipped though as the introduction seems to give an overview of the entire story.

My lovely new mac is here and I have got used to the extra screen real estate disturbingly quickly. I've spent all day rebuilding the PowerBook, well a reinstall and applying updates and installing a few of the basics like growl, Adium and quicksilver.

My god the screen is small, sigh.

I need to sort out disk space, I only went for the 100 GB and I'm through two thirds of it already *sigh*.

Okay, I'm back from Laos - It was great, more later ( Photos being uploaded to Flickr as I type).

Went to Gomez lastnight, it was fucking awesome - they were so not what I expected, for one there was thousands of them, okay 7 or something and they all looked normal - Not all "we are cool cos we are in an excellent band".

Oh and on a "funny, but incredible bad taste", bring you this.

Brought a tagine and a great Moroccan cookbook over the weekend. So far I have learnt the following:

a) Tagines change temperature slowly compared to a gas hob, don't turn them up and leave them - they make a mess.

b) Pay attention to measurements when it comes to mixing spices, to much chili IS a bad thing.

The cookbook is made in morocco, brilliant book, even if you don't want to make any of the recipe's, wonderful photography.

Different availability on itunes shits me, as does incomplete album collections.
Would you buy paint from someone who can only supply 4 out of 6 colours or 2 out of 16.
